14: Scripture’s Authority

About Our God Reigns Series
Martha's thorough and definitive series on one of the most pivotal spiritual issues, and one of the most misunderstood: Authority.
Much is made of Jesus quoting scripture in the wilderness to his enemy, as though to pull the right verse is the victory. Spouting scripture has no magic to dispel the devil. Scripture has phenomenal power but unless you submit your mind to its inerrant truth, its power is largely lost to you . . .
Jesus’ use of scripture was the declaration of
its authority over Himself!
He placed Himself UNDER the dictates of the Bible and therefore its God-breathed power covered him. The banner of the Father’s Mandate-in-Writing and its power to protect lay in His submission to it, not his reading of it.
He quoted what the Holy Spirit had given Him in preparation for the test. And by His grappling with it, He had bowed to its tenets. He quoted what He had agreed to obey. He was giving the reason for his actions, the foundation for their merit.
The authority of the Word of God is the rule of Life, the breath of God. But to possess it requires that you surrender to it. Many study the Bible who do not come under it. Many use it who do not conform to it. Many love it who will not obey it.
The most difficult surrender of the Christian life is the annihilation of your precious ideas, so you can capitulate to the eternal Logos of God, and submit to a Higher Intelligence. It is the Authority of God’s Word you accept, that runs the enemy from the wilderness of your trial. Your loyalty to the Scriptures because “God said it.”
