The Lord Jesus has a multitude of names. Names that reveal facets and gifts of His boundless being. But one name will emerge at the end, when we see Him at last. A name that unveils His impassioned devotion to the humanity He fashioned for just such a union. He will be called…the Bridegroom.

The culmination of history is a wedding. Humanity will be gathered to the feet of a Lordly Bridegroom. And fairy tales that hint at His princely being, will pale in the presence of His unimaginable splendor. Out of the field that is humanity, tares will be torn out, and a Hidden Bride will rise out from the puzzlement of a weeded world (Matthew 13:38f). And she will meet the One who dreamed marriage and whittled her as His gold-covered masterpiece.

Bridegroom…Jesus’ highest role for mankind’s need and His highest need of mankind’s role. In all the Gospels, no one other than John the Baptist gave Jesus this title except…Himself. Jesus spoke of Himself as Bridegroom. As God, living by anticipation, longing to be…Husband.

Hidden in His parables, in the secret of a seeming “story” He reveals Himself as the Bridegroom of our destiny. And He drops nuggets of His nature that a Breathless Bride can dig and hold until He comes for her.

In the parable of the Ten Virgins, He is the Delaying Bridegroom who hides the hour of His coming. He is the Demanding Bridegroom who expects His virgin brides to wait unswerving and in constant fullness. He is the Denying Bridegroom who shuts a door to the unready and refuses their plea to open (Matthew 25). He is “the Bridegroom taken away.” And anticipates the sorrowful fastings of those who are left to squander a whole life, waiting.

(Reading Mark 2)

Jesus moved consciously, ever aware of His position in God’s ultimate purpose, that the Son would be a Bridegroom and share His throne with a Bride. But this was a secret and rarely mentioned name. No focus shone on the Bridegroom title. It was left for the Lovers of this Lovely Lord to discover…by desire.
