When Kuwait was invaded by Iraq and our American troops went to fight a war called Desert Storm, I was filled with enormous energy to intercede. What happened in that experience served as a milestone for me of how to pray in crisis, and I share it now with the hope that many will enter this great adventure called prayer and ride the tide of God’s purpose out of the national tragedy of September 11th.

I began in that crisis of “Desert Storm” by watching all the news reports, all the interviews and the many experts that the media put on the air. I prayed and prayed. I took my work into the living room and worked in front of the TV, all the time praying with the enormous energy that God seemed to be pouring into me. The more I used up that energy, the more came into me.

I was at first simply asking God how to pray, what to pray. I didn’t pray. I asked for prayer. Most of prayer is asking for the right prayer. When you hit the right prayer it is answered immediately. What we can imagine is small, but God answers the prayers He originates.

The first word I heard from God was this: “Are you on the side of the United States or are you on MY side?”

I hadn’t considered that this might be a conflict. Of course God would be on America’s side! Of course He wanted us to win. Well, this question shook my premise. I considered and prayed and said, “I am on Your side, Lord. If you want to judge America, if you want to use this to chasten her, I am on Your side!” It was no small decision. And if you remember, the whole mood of the media and of Christian television was a great concern that this war would possibly take us down as a nation and certainly rob us of many sons.  There was much talk of the deserved judgment of God on our nation.

So I chose. My sons were of eligible age to enter military service, and besides that, if God wanted to judge America, I would be subject to the effects of that judgment. It was a big death, a significant relinquishment. I had been a patriot, a champion of this democracy. But “Yes, Lord, I am on YOUR side and whatever you choose I’m with you.”

I would later understand that the Lord God had to get my personal agenda out of the way, so He could share with me His will and purpose – and in the end bring a great victory to my nation. But it had to be all FOR Him. We have to stand utterly with God, in sole loyalty to Him. That is the objective stand that makes us able to hear with purity His secret plans.

Then the Lord told me one of His purposes of this operation for America. It was for revival among the troops. Books were published after the conflict was over telling the stories, many of them, of the conversions that happened, of the revival that took place on the edge of that desert. So with that marvelous energy that drove me, I prayed for revival. Day after day.

One TV minister said, “America, your men, your sons, your husbands are going to come back as different men. They have found God in the desert.”

I continued to pray. I was praying hours every day, really all day long.

Remember the many hours, days and weeks we waited for that war to begin? In those weeks of delay, the intercessors were fighting the war-before-the-war. It seemed as I prayed that I entered a realm above the principalities of the air. The constant prayer penetrated to a place somehow above the enemy, a place not of war with the powers of the air, not even a place of petition, but a realm where the activity was simply the declaration of God’s will.

I was not focusing on the enemy’s strength, or the devil’s forces. I was living in a place that concerned itself only with God’s strategy. In that place, God had no resistance. He directed the war. And I had the strange sensation that I was anything but alone. I was in my house praying day after day – all alone.  But when I reached a certain level or sweep of prayer (I hardly know how to describe it), I was aware that I was in an unseen company of many intercessors with angels at our side to do our bidding. This company of “many” all knew God’s mind, agreed to His plans. “We” knew what to pray and “we” were in absolute unity about it. We were the fighters directing, by His specific order, the movements of angels and the defeat of principalities and nations.

I tell you, we sent in angels before the tanks. We conquered the enemy before the conquerors went in. Desert Storm was an amazing war. It was over in a matter of hours. There were a few tragic casualties but nothing compared to what was projected by those who were supposedly experts. Most of the media experts missed entirely in the prediction of what would happen. Experts can weigh only piles of information, and even that data is sifted through their particular mindset to a conclusion strictly of this earthly realm.

There is another realm. It is a place. It is an actual place of awareness where God’s mind is above all, untouched by anything, and ruler of all. To enter the current of His will in intercession is to ride a river of great movement and a force that cannot be stopped.  A River flowing toward His purpose and accomplishing His Ideas, simply by prayer, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the directing of angels. In that sphere, God moves. And you can catch this stream, ride the momentum, and share His plans by being the vessel of His intention, by agreement with His brilliance and His governing of history.

It is not merely for the president, the government and the armed forces. Each of us has a part.

Meet you in that place for this hour? Come, pray to pray!  And let us participate with the Lord Jesus as He goes into the work of this conflict that America has been forced to fight.
