About What’s In A Name? Series

What's in a name? Names identify, explain, and serve to distinguish one from another. What do God's names reveal to us about Him, coming from Him?

Devotional

Abram’s heart longed for children.

Then the word of the Lord came to him (Abram). “This man [Eliezer] will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir.”
Genesis 15:4

Impatient, Abram let Sarai, his wife, persuade him to have a son by her maid, Hagar. When Hagar was to give birth to a son, the angel of the Lord gave her the boy’s name: Ishmael, which means ‘God hears.’ This child would be a “wild donkey…against everyone and…everyone against him.”

Abram was 86 years old when Ishmael was born. For 13 difficult years, Abram would suffer the consequences of his mistake in failing to wait for God’s way.

At last, God came to reveal Himself to Abram.

Genesis 17:1 NIV
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said,
“I am the Almighty God…”
