Several of the finest young Jewish men (without defect) were chosen to serve in the king’s court. Daniel was one.
The king put them in a school of the Chaldeans’ language and literature. Babylon sought to absorb them into its gods and values, to make them live as heathens. Nebuchadnezzar would erase their very identity, replace their history, and cause them – most of all – to forget their One True God.
Never Belteshazzar
Their names were changed to the names of Chaldean gods. Yet Daniel never considered himself Belteshazzar. These foreigners could call him what they liked. He was Daniel, son of Judah, whose root and foundation were in the Most High God and His words.
The story is about Daniel, always Daniel, and never his false name: Belteshazzar.
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his officials, to bring in some of the sons of Israel, including some of the royal family and of the nobles…
