About The Mystery of Discipleship Series
Jesus’ closest disciples were trusted to speak for Him and tell us His story. All are called to the mystery of discipleship, but the choice is ours.
Reading Mark 3 in the Amplified Bible
Jesus had just chosen his twelve disciples…
20. Then He went to a house (probably Peter’s) but a throng came together again, so that Jesus and His disciples could not even take food.
21. And when those who belonged to Him (His kinsmen) heard it, they went out to take Him by force, for they kept saying, He is out of His mind (beside Himself, deranged)!
Family seeks to control the disciple who is abandoned to follow Christ. Jesus also said – to disciples only – your enemies will be the members of your own household.
Take Christ “by force!” Imagine! Of all people, His family knew His true identity, but in the strangeness of His journey and the chaos around Him, they believed it meant He was out of control and out of reality.
“They kept saying, ‘He is out of His mind…’” As families do, they talked at length with each other about Him, behind His back, then judged Him and labeled Him. The endless talk escalated until they were the ones irrational and out of reality. The ones who loved Him did not understand Him and became His enemies, even as He was following God and miracles were taking place wherever He went.
It is this kind of control in which families typically think they know the disciple, and naturally feel they have a right to dominate. I believe behind it was the sense that they were losing Him to His disciples, that Peter and the others had become His family…and it was so!
