About The Mystery of Discipleship Series
Jesus’ closest disciples were trusted to speak for Him and tell us His story. All are called to the mystery of discipleship, but the choice is ours.
JUDE, A servant of Jesus Christ (the Messiah) and brother of James (Mark 6:3)
JAMES, A servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ (Mark 6:8)
Jude and James were Jesus’ half brothers. They eventually came to see Him as Messiah and bow to His Lordship. They had abandoned their family ties to Him and didn’t bother to mention it in their epistles. That natural bond had no eternal meaning. Their relationship to Him was on the basis of being His servant—that is, to serve Him in God’s will. Now they were Christ’s TRUE FAMILY.
Note from the Amplified Bible: James presided at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15) where the church leaders reached an agreement for the basis of Christian fellowship.
James was a leader in the first century church, but not because of his being the natural brother of Jesus. He came into Christ the same way all others did: receiving Him as Savior within. And he came to live as a servant of his Messiah within God’s will. This was the criterion for his leadership.
Jude’s writing is an amazing discernment of the nature of false teachers and ways of the wicked. He could only have written this by the Spirit out of a life of severe personal purity from the deepest repentance.
Jesus’ family was blessed by His stance of loyalty to God first and His disciples next. Christ had a right view that pain which issues from selfish control that opposes God is illegitimate and unpitiable. So any pain His family felt because of their rebellion received no sympathy from the Lord.
But the greatest mystery of this is how did Christ pray for His family so that they came to God? I suppose we will have to learn that in our own lives from the Lord Himself…
