About What’s In A Name? Series
What's in a name? Names identify, explain, and serve to distinguish one from another. What do God's names reveal to us about Him, coming from Him?
Genesis 17:4-5 AMPC
As for Me, behold, My covenant (solemn pledge) is with you, and you shall be the father of many nations. Nor shall your name any longer be Abram [high, exalted father]; but your name shall be Abraham [father of a multitude], for I have made you the father of many nations.
When Abram was a man confident of his sufficiency, he was a normal man. Chosen and called by God, but he was still entirely natural, no different than all other men.
Then Abram’s love affair with himself died, and he could become a spiritual man. A spiritual man is one who can KNOW God and live in trusting dependence on Him — being still and quiet, letting God be God. The spiritual man is a weak man, a man with new-found courage, willing to live weak on God’s chest. This is a new man, a rare man. A man of God-with-God needs a new name. And he must be called by something greater because he has been made lesser.
