About What’s In A Name? Series

What's in a name? Names identify, explain, and serve to distinguish one from another. What do God's names reveal to us about Him, coming from Him?

Genesis 49:25 NASB
And by the Almighty Who blesses you With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.

At the end of his days, Jacob called his sons and pronounced a prophecy and blessing over each of the twelve. This verse is part of his blessing of Joseph, who stands as a type of Christ.

There is yet another root word of the name, in Hebrew: ‘shed’ – so close to the name of El Shaddai. It is translated twenty-four times as ‘breast.’ This is the intimate, nourishing, satisfying nature of our Great El, God. It relates to the child-need in us all, and it speaks of nourishment beyond mere supply, the fullness of super-abundance.

Only the unbound-child such as John, would be so rapt in love that he was ‘leaning back against Jesus’ breast’ (John 13:25).
