About Under His Wings Series

Psalm 91 has amazing promises of provision and safety - and the requirements for accessing these blessings in full. Come under His wings today!

I don’t usually focus on experiences (as wonderful as they are, they can take our eyes from the Lord Jesus) but I seem to be led to share this one with you.

Shelter (the Hebrew meaning): from a word and a root word that means “dense (or dark) cloud covering.”

The cloud-shelter of the Most High is so very real. It can be “felt” and, on rare occasion, seen…

I was picking up a fellow worshiper in the airport. The moment we met, we were hit with such glory that both of us could barely walk. We felt a great softness of God’s presence, but it came as a heavy softness that seemed to envelop us. As we stumbled along, we came to a large hall on the lower level. That hall was filled with what looked like smoke. Yet there was no smoking in this part of the airport and no smell of fire.

In the mass of people, no one else seemed to notice this strange cloud. It was so thick that it should have alarmed people and it filled the large hall. I was astonished at the cloud and looked around to see if others were reacting to its presence. People were just going through the hall and up the escalator as though nothing was unusual. Not one person was looking at the cloud. Also, no one seemed to pay attention to us as we staggered along, trying to hold each other up. We should have been a sight to stare at, but no one appeared to notice us.

As we went up to another level toward baggage claim, the “smoke” was no longer there. That heavy-soft presence of God remained on us for some time but the cloud, though it could still be felt, was not seen again.

It was a long time before we even mentioned the cloud and discovered we had both seen it. The presence of the Lord was so strong that He was the absolute focus. You see, the cloud is not just a cloud, it is the actual presence of God.

It seems to me that the cloud is not merely a hiding place but a place so much IN the Most High that it is a bliss that can be felt. The cloud is actually the presence of God’s glory and when we enter it (by some way of His grace), we are lost in Him and the world is lost to us.

We two were in a visible experience of the shelter of God – that place is real and accessible! It is truly a “secret place” as the King James renders it. I believe the crowd could not see us.

A later verse in Psalm 91 will show the hidden nature of this shelter of the Most High.

And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold I will come to you in a thick cloud…”
Exodus 19:9 NASB
