About What’s In A Name? Series

What's in a name? Names identify, explain, and serve to distinguish one from another. What do God's names reveal to us about Him, coming from Him?

Adam means simply ‘man or mankind.’

What is the meaning of this assignment given to Adam, the naming of all living creatures of earth and sky? In the first brief account of creation (Genesis Chapter 1), God gave to the male and the female His blessing and His purpose:

Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule… over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.
Genesis 1:28 NASB

To name ‘every living thing’ was the sign of Adam receiving the purpose, accepting the responsibility, and taking up the dominion that God had given him.
