Matthew 5:1-2 AMPC
Seeing the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and when He was seated, His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are…”
Unencumbered by the crowds, away from the swirl of activity, this is a small picture of laying aside all duties and stresses to just listen to Jesus.
The Beatitudes are not rules and laws, just higher and more difficult. It is called the ‘sermon on the mount’ but really it was just a leisurely, intimate conversation on the mountainside overlooking the Galilee. Jesus sat down with His disciples, probably on the large stones that lay around the hill. And they gathered around Him.
The Beatitudes are actually a beautiful picture of Jesus’ own life-ways. They are laws to obey, but kingdom laws that express the very nature of the King Himself, which only the King can live! Otherwise we would not have even the smallest imagination that such a simple way to live is even possible.
Jesus’ very Life we can—and are called to—imbibe! Not to imitate such order and space but to let Christ live. And we can learn it as we experience Him.
