About The Mystery of Discipleship Series
Jesus’ closest disciples were trusted to speak for Him and tell us His story. All are called to the mystery of discipleship, but the choice is ours.
Paul’s idea of ministry differs radically from ours today. He was writing to compare the glory of the Law on the face of Moses with the glory of the present age of the Church. And he described his own purpose to the Corinthians and to all the churches.
2 Corinthians 3:8-9 AMPC
Why should not the dispensation of the Spirit [this spiritual ministry whose task it is to cause men to obtain and be governed by the Holy Spirit] be attended with much greater and more splendid glory?
For if the service that condemns [the ministration of doom] had glory how infinitely more abounding in splendor and glory must be the service that makes righteous [the ministry that produces and fosters righteous living and right standing with God]!
Do you see? How wonderful! Real ministry is to ‘cause men to obtain and be governed by the Holy Spirit,’ to bring God’s children to right relationship with God. That is building! That is Church building, one by one. And that alone is ‘ministry.’ Oh, it does have greater glory!
But that building, that ministry to the church will break your heart, cost your life, and bring down on you terrible persecution, misunderstanding and loss of reputation. That building-ministry will itself be your own deep, continuing Cross, killing everything that is not solely for and by the Lord. It was so for Paul. But, praise God, a few become willing to ‘be governed by the Holy Spirit’ and they will be the joy of your heart and the glory of Jesus.
