About The Mystery of Discipleship Series
Jesus’ closest disciples were trusted to speak for Him and tell us His story. All are called to the mystery of discipleship, but the choice is ours.
Luke 14:33 NASB
So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.
The Lord is ever concerned with the heart, only the heart. All of life is the exposure of the heart.
The calling is not necessarily to give away all you have. It is the heart’s sense of possessiveness. It is the heart, the secret loves of the heart, that the Lord is going to probe. What you ‘own’ – possess and treasure – owns you by your own heart’s affection.
Watchman Nee writes that we are to give the Lord ownership of everything without reservation. What He gives back and allows us to keep is then ‘sanctified,’ and that simply means it belongs to the Lord.
What you own, you love. What you own, owns you.
And the Lord demands all the heart by requiring all the possessions of the heart. The disciple is one who has given the entire heart to the Lord—all affections, all masters…all possessions. And from the disciple, the Lord may take away whatever He pleases at any time.
The Lord is the security; the Lord is the supply. By clutching nothing, the disciple has everything!
