About The Mystery of Discipleship Series
Jesus’ closest disciples were trusted to speak for Him and tell us His story. All are called to the mystery of discipleship, but the choice is ours.
Matthew 5:13 AMPC
You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men.
Salt stands for purity. It is made of sun and water – something from the heavens and something from the earth – but salt cannot be mixed with the sand of the earth. If it is, its purpose is ruined!
Jesus demands that His disciples carry His life as a real presence into ‘the earth.’ Not mere talk, not using Him to gain ambitions but His Life and His Life only. No soul.
The mixture that brings ruin to every phase of life is SOUL and its ambitions alongside spirit and its pure focus. A little soul, a portion of spirit and amazingly, that is disaster and futility.
The cross takes care of the soul-ruin of the disciple and exposes the soul’s unfixable wretchedness. When a group of people are (in the process of) being made pure in motive and clean of sin by the Blood, they will be a Church that affects the world. They will be a force that exposes ungodliness and pushes back the corruption of evil wherever they move, even if only in prayer. They will also be judged, picked apart, and scorned, but where the salt of their spiritual purity is received, their influence is freedom, delight and health.
Our problem with being salt of the earth is unbelief. We don’t believe that what Jesus calls for IS us, is believers. May we receive this ‘label’ with utter joy and embrace it with faith. You ARE the salt of the earth! Glory!
