Matthew 6:22, 23 ESV
The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Jesus gave this long sermon outdoors on the hillside overlooking the Galilee, a beautiful site, strewn with huge rocks on which people could sit. Called the Beatitudes, Jesus gave the great principles of the Kingdom of Heaven, the laws of His kingdom, and in doing so He revealed Himself, His own character, nature and values; what is important and what is blessed. To follow Jesus is to partake of His own Way. These teachings are pictures of Him Who is the Way!
Jesus now comes to the crux of the sermon. The issue upon which all life turns…what do you love?
What you love will be your focus, your gaze, your holy obsession.
